Significant update and changes to how I Rate wines on EssexWinereview.com

Essex Wine Review recently celebrated two years on online. For a while now I have contemplated making some changes to how I evaluate and rate wines.

The first significant change is that price has been removed as an evaluate category. The price of a wine should not be part of the evaluation of the quality of the wine.  I will continue to comment when I feel that a wine is a good value.

Since the beginning I did not use the star rate system properly and they became of little to no real value. I have reviewed a number of wine rating systems that use the “5 Star” ratings and have now more clearly defined how I will rate wines.

5 Stars: Exceptional quality wines. (94 – 100 points)

4 Stars: Excellent / Very good wine. Solid style and character. (87 – 93 points)

3 Stars: Good wine, well worth trying. (82 – 86 points)

2 Stars: Average but still drinkable wine. (70 – 81 points)

1 Star: Poor or substandard wine, best avoided.(69 or less points)

As of September 26th, 2010 the ratings on EssexwineReview.com will to be lower than those posted before this date. Star ratings before this date should not be compared with ratings after this September 26th, 2010. What this means is that wines receiving 3 stars are actually good wines, more often good to very good wines will receive either 3 or 4 stars. On rare exceptions a will wine receive 5 stars.
