Mastronardi Casa Nostra Baco Noir 2008
On New Year’s Eve member’s of the Cottam Wine Society gathered to ring in 2010 and conduct a blind taste challenge to pick the best local Baco Noir. Eight local Baco’s and one from the Niagara region were uncorked.
Colio 2008, Pelee Island 2008, Mastronardi Casa Nostra 2008, Erie Shore 2008, Muscedere 2007 Reserve, Aleksander 2007, D’Angelo 2007 Reserve, and Sanson 2005 Reserve. From the Niagara region, Henry of Pelham 2005 Baco Reserve was also thrown into the mix to make things a little more interesting.
Mastronardi Casa Nostra 2008 and Sanson 2005 Reserve tied for first place. Sanson’s 2005 Reserve Baco was a previous “Wine Of The Month” (October 2009)
Mastronardi’s Baco Noir is now available at many local LCBO’s for only $10.

Pelee Island Cabernet Merlot 2008 (Stepped up to the Plate)

Aleksander Estate Chardonnay 2008
I can’t help but wonder how busy it must be at local wineries in the month of March as I enjoy this Chardonnay. Prunning is well underway as the wineries wonder what will be in store for the 2010 vintage.
Aleksander Estate Winery has been producing a lovely Chardonnay and this 2008 is no exception. I tasted this wine last May shortly afer it was bottled. It was quite good then and seems to be really improving as it sits in the bottle. Wonderful citrus notes greet the palate. There is a nice balance of acidity and sugar making this a nice quaffer.
Aleksander’s 2007 Chardonnay sold out without much notice. If you haven’t tried this one yet, get it before it’s gone.

Muscedere Vineyards Baco Noir Reserve 2007
Every so often I open a bottle of wine that just sets itself apart from all of the rest. This is one of them. The Lake Erie North Shore wine region offers the perfect growing season for baco. That’s why there are so many good ones from this area.
This wine has received the following awards:
2009 “Wine Access Canadian Wine Awards” Silver medal
2009 “All Canadian Wine Championship” Bronze medal
Spring is official here, fire up the BBQ as this Baco pairs well with BBQ’ed foods. It’s great with pizza too!

Sanson Estate Riesling 2008
When out touring the local wineries this summer make sure this wine is on your “Must Buy” list. It’s a wine that reflects the soil and climate of Lake Erie North Shore. A wonderful example of the region’s terrior!
Nice acidity, mineral and petrol notes. Zesty with hints of peach and one amazingly long finish. Ontario excellence.

Viewpointe Estate Winery - Barrel Fermented Chardonnary 2006
Viewpointe’s Barrel Fermented Chardonnary has been consistently one of Lake Erie North Shore’s best wines. Their 2005 vintage was extraordinary and the follow up was not going to be easy to match. The winemaker’s at Viewpointe succeeded!
Their passion and desire for perfection are reflected in this wine. Wonderfully complex in the nose and taste. The 2006 Vintage was released to the public on Mother’s Day. It’s worth a visit to the winery even just to purchase this wine.

Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery Riesling 2009
Sprucewood Shores Estate Winery has been on a roll lately with their new releases. Three fanastic Chardonnay’s, one barrel fermented, one with a little bit of oak and the third with no oak at all. With all the chardonnays going on their Riesling could easily be overlook but you will be missing a real treat if you do.
Excellent value paired with a fanastic Riesling make this a great summer time choice. Looking for a refreshing summer time sipper? This is it.
