Essex Winer Review

Wine of the Month 2009

Begining in January 2009 Essex Wine Review will crown one of the wines that we have reviewed as “Wine Of The Month”.

January 2009
Essex Wine Review - Wine of the Month, January 2009

Mastronardi Cabernet Franc 2006

This wine was the first wine listed on Essex Wine review. This wine is now avalable at many local LCBO locations in Windsor and Essex County. The LCBO doesn’t provide enough shelf space for local wines so it is always nice to see a local wine on the shelf.

This is an excellent Cabernet Franc. I suggest that you buy a bottle or two before they are all gone. Head on over to your local LCBO and pick up this wine. You will be supporting local wineries and hopefully with enough sales the LCBO will add more local wines to their shelf space.

February 2009
February 2009 - Wine of The Month, Erie Shore Unoaked Chardonnay 2006

Erie Shore Unoaked Chardonnay 2006

The Essex County wine region (Lake Erie North Shore) and (Pelee Island) have been producing some excellent Chardonnay’s.

February is the month of Valentine’s. If you are looking for the perfect wine to share with you Valentine a Chardonnay is your best bet. For many women, Chardonnay is the wine of choice and men, you will enjoy this wine too.

This wine is available directly from the winery. It is also available at many local LCBO’s and has been selling well. In fact on a recent check at the LCBO at the Round House Centre in Windsor only 2 bottles remained. I am sure they will restock this fine wine.

March 2009
Essex Wine Review - Wine of the Month, March 2009. Muscedere Vineyards Meritage 2006

Muscedere Vineyards Meritage 2006

Meritage is a combination of the words “Merit” and “Heritage”. For a wine to be called a Meritage it has to be a “high-end” wine for the winery. It also must be be a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot. This is Muscedere’s first Meritage release and it not only meets the standards of a Meritage, it exceeds them.

This wine is a full bodied red wine that is a well balanced blend. Several local wineries have released a Meritage. The Muscedere’s have raised the bar and set a high standard for this blend.

This is a small lot vintage. (85 cases) Less than half of the lot still remains. Don’t wait too long to get this one or it will be gone.

April 2009
Essex Wine Review - Wine of the Month, April 2009. Aleksander Estate Pinot Noir 2007

Aleksander Estate Pinot Noir 2007

This month we select another small vintage lot. Just 35 cases or 420 bottles of this wine were produced. While not cheap at $24.95/bottle as of April 1st over half of the lot has already been sold and it has only been on the market for about one month now.

This Pinot Noir was aged in French Oak barrels. It is a fanastic red wine. If you enjoy a good red wine do not miss the opportunity to try this one. It won’t be around very long.

This Pinot Noir has juicy red cherry, plum and spicy oak characters to begin with followed by acidity and fine tannins for a dry and short finish. I described it as “deliciously drinkable”.

Plain and simple …. it is a very good wine. It’s one that is easy to appreciate.

May 2009
May 2009 - Wine of The Month, Mastronardi Estate Winery Merlot 2006

Mastronardi Estate Merlot 2006

Local restaurants take note. If this wine is not on your wine list, it should be.

Mastronardi Estate Winery’s Merlot is ready to be opened right now and enjoyed. The taste is well balanced. Some tobacco, bell peppers, rich fruit with smooth, easy drinking flavours with a nice long finish after the glass has been set down.

As you begin your search for a good wine this summer to have with that BBQ’ed steak this is one of the wines to consider. Mother’s Day is also this month, this wine would make a nice gift for her.

This merlot has been entered in a few wine competitions that will take place over the next few month. I expect it to win a few awards. It is one of the best merlots currently available from local wineries in Southwest Ontario.

June 2009
June 2009 - Wine of The Month, Sprucewood Shores Deux Rougey 2006

Sprucewood Shores Deux Rouge 2006

For June’s Wine of the Month I went looking for the a red wine that would be perfect to serve at wedding receptions. First, it had to taste good and second it must be priced affordable as it doesn’t take long for that bar bill to start adding up.

Sprucewood Shores Deux Rouge 2006 was an easy pick for June. It is a nice blend of Cab Franc and Pinot Noir that is easy to sip on and will pair well at a wedding reception. Priced under $12 this is one of the most affordable wines in Essex County.

August 2009 - Wine of The Month, Colio Estate Vineyards - CEV Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Colio Estate Vineyards – CEV Sauvignon Blanc 2006

The 2006 CEV Sauvignon Blanc from Colio Estate Vineyards was awarded Les Citadelles du Vin’s “Trophée Excellence” at VinExpo Asia Pacific 2008 in Hong Kong, China.

“This is another strong showing in international competition for our winery and shows the ability of this grape and this region to compete on the world stage,” said Colio’s Winemaker Tim Reilly.

Eleven hundred cases were produced from the estate vineyards out of a growing season that began with an abbreviated but quite warm spring. It was followed by a hot, relatively dry summer leading up to the harvest which allowed for good maturation of the white grape varieties in the Lake Erie North Shore.

The CEV Sauvignon Blanc is available at any of the 14 Wine Region of Colio Estate retail boutiques across the province or directly through the winery.

Smith & Wilson Cabernet Franc 2005

If you have not had a chance to make the drive to visit Smith & Wilson Estate Winery in Blenheim right now is the time to head there.

This month’s “Wine of the Month” is only available from the winery between the Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday and Christmas Day. Each year they release a limited amount of their Cabernet Franc 2005 to the public and when it’s gone … its gone!

2005 was a great year for Cabernet Franc in the Lake Erie North Shore wine region. This Cabernet Franc just seems to get better each year the limited supply is released. At $18 this is a steal and would make an excellent Christmas gift for that hard to buy for wine drinker. Buy it while you can!!
