Essex Winer Review

About

Essex Wine Review (EssexWineReview.com)

Growing up in Essex County most of life I really wasn’t aware that there were so many local wineries producing such good wine. My first introduction to an Essex County wine that I can recall was way back in the early 80’s when Colio wine was the only local winery that I had ever heard of. At weddings it was often Colio wine that was found on the table.

Several years ago Wanda and I took a tour of several wineries in the Niagara Region. This sparked our interest in Ontario wines. Up until that time my perception was that good wines only came from California, France, Italy, and maybe Australia. It didn’t take me long to find out that I was wrong. Grapes grown in Ontario produced some of the best wines I have ever tasted.

After the Niagara tour Wanda and I decided to check out the wineries in our own backyard. It didn’t take us very long to discover one of Ontario’s biggest secrets. Wines produced in Southwestern Ontario (Essex County) are just as good and often even better than wines we have tasted from around the world.

By no means are we connoisseurs of local wines. When I hear someone decribe a wine as “a hint of leather, plums supporting a fine tannic structure” I have no idea what they mean or even if they really know what they are talking about. I just know when a wine taste good and when it doesn’t. I know that some wines just taste better with a BBQ steak and other taste just fine on a hot summer evening sitting on our deck.

This site began in a rather interesting way. One evening last summer Wanda and I went to the Keg in Windsor. We thought it would be nice to have a local bottle of red wine with our dinner. When the waitress told us that the only Ontario wines they offer were from the Niagara region we were disappointed. We spoke with the manager of the Keg about this and he too was sorry that he was not able to offer wines from Essex County. There are many other fine local resaurants that do offer wines from Essex County. We will visit them instead from now on.

Wanda and I talked over dinner that evening at the Keg about creating a web site to promote interest in wines from our area. This web site is the result of that dinner conversation.

Why are not all of the local wines listed on your web site?

Good question. Wanda and I have discussed this at great length. Originally our plan was to tour all of the wineries in Essex County, get a list of all there wines and ask them if we could take photos of their bottles for this web site. Rather than do that we decided to just let the site grown naturally and over time (like a good wine I guess). The wines listed on this site are all local wines that we have purchased ourselves. We can’t think of a better way to support our local wineries. Wanda and I favour red wines and therefore you will see more of them here.

If there is a wine that you would like to see listed her so that you can leave a review please do email me at gary@essexwinereview.com and we will do our best to add it as soon as we can.

Cheers!
Gary
