Essex Wine Review, Wine of the Month, February 2012
Wine of the Month - February 2012
Colio Estate Vineyards 2008 Gamay Noir

There is not a large production of Gamay Noir in Essex county and when it does find its way into a bottle of wine it is often used as a blending grape.

Colio's Gamay Noir is Lake Erie North Shore only 100% Gamay wine!

Tasty spice and black pepper notes along with a nice balance of cherry fruits are the recipe for this delicious red wine.

Winemaker’s Notes:
A wonderful expression of Merlot that exhibits bold and intense licorice and plum notes. The mouthfeel is clean and full bodied with a dry finish. This wine is perfect for aging and will show it’s best in 2-3 years.

Winemaker’s Notes:
This 60% Cabernet Franc, 40% Merlot blend was aged 16 months in French oak barrels. The wine shows good concentration of both fruit and colour with blackberry, vanilla and spice on the palate.

Sprucewood Shores Barrel Reserve Chardonnay 2009 Review

    Winemaker’s Notes:
Our 2009 barrel chardonnay is a new and exciting version compared to previous years that melds the best of both worlds. The crisp and fruity character has been preserved with noticeable fruit forward while the midpalate displays coconut and the finish lingers with a gentle flavour of butterscotch.

    Cabernet Franc

    Winemaker’s Notes:
Great tannins, structure and fruit on this Classic Erie Shore Vintage. Wonderful with grilled or roasted red meats, chicken, turkey (dark meat) vegetables, pizza, and blue cheese.

This Bordeaux variety is particularly well suited to the Essex County climate, growing season and soils. The result is a full flavoured red wine that matches nicely with grilled or roasted red meats, chicken, turkey, grilled vegetables, hard and blue cheeses.

Smith & Wilson Viognier 2008 Review

    4.33 overall score

    Winemaker’s Notes:
(vee-own-yay) A wonderfully floral white from the Northern Rhone valley, this grape carries a creamy mouth feel with notes of honey and stone fruits.

Pleasant Pairings: This is a great wine with food! Spicy – but not hot – flavours, like ginger, turmeric and cumin are good partners here, as are game meats such as goose, turkey, and duck.
