You can’t buy this one at the LCBO, and you won’t find it on the shelf at Pelee Island Winery’s retail store in Kingsville so if you want to try it you will have to head out to your favourite restaurant that has it on their wine list.
Calabria Pizzeria in Cottam, a local supporter of Lake Erie North Shore and Pelee Island wines is where I was able to taste this wine and recommend pairing it with their famous Salty Dog pizza. Calabria’s wine list features only local VQA wines at very reasonable prices. At Calabria, the 2007 Pelee Island Private Selection Shiraz was only $21 / bottle.
Let’s have a look at the wine:
Complex nose. Leather, black cherry, black pepper with a herbaceous edge. On the palate, it is dry, juicy acidity balanced with just enough tannins. Fruits noted: black cherry, blackberry along with a bit of pepper / spice on the finish.
It is a delicious Shiraz that is not a big fruit bomb like so many of those I have tasted lately from Australia. Head out to Calabria Pizzeria in Cottam to have this perfect pairing for around $50. Call ahead to make a reservation as all of the tables tend to fill up most weekends and many week nights.
