Muscedere Vineyards Syrah 2008 Review
Winemaker’s Notes:
This full-bodied Syrah was made from grapes that were hand-harvested exclusively from our vineyards. Aged twelve months in French oak this wine is a hearty red wine with a smooth texture and smooth tannins. This wine exhibits characteristics of dark berries and raisons. Enjoy with barbecued ribs, rack of lamb or steak.

This was not an easy wine to review, but really, it should have been. I was very mindful of the $40 price tag it would cost to open a bottle of this wine. In terms of wines from the Lake Erie North region this one is expensive. Take a trip to Niagara where it is not uncommon for small lot vintages to be in this price range reminds me how lucky we are to live in a wine region where wine prices rarely top $20.
So for now, let’s put the price to the side and look at the wine on its own merit.
Very nice complexity of ripe berry, fresh herbs, spice, and black pepper. Good acidity and soft tannins which provide a silky mouthfeel. I was very surprised at just how smooth this wine was already. It was almost as if his wine had already been cellared for quite some time. It is ready to drink right now however I imagine given a year or two this will be one of those wines you will look forward to opening on a special occasion.
This is the good stuff!
Now back to that price. Yes, $40 is a lot to spend and I am sure many, including myself would find buying a case out of reach but now and then treating yourself to something special of exceptional quality is worth it. Buy a couple and if you can resist the temptation to not open both of them now, put one aside and see how it taste next year, I think you will be amazed.
