Winemaker’s Notes:
The wine within this bottle is the culmination of twelve years of research and development. Three unique grape varieties blended together, provide you our customer with perhaps the first and only wine from our province made with homegrown sustainable cultivars. Disease resistance and cold hardiness are the hallmarks of these varieties. Please enjoy Essex County’s own wine, Colchester Cuvée.

GRAPES: A blend of three varieties, presently known as HG01, HG03, and HG04 (HG = Harrow Graft).

The first time I tasted this wine I didn’t really like it. But there is a good reason why. Viewpointe offered samples of this wine during the “Explore The Shore” weekend. It was hot and the wine was being served outside on a hot day. The wine was too warm to really enjoy. I picked up a bottle any way to taste under better conditions.

The wine tasted best slightly chilled.

With my chilled glass of wine in hand, let’s have a look at this wine.

Amazing colour. Deep purple with a lot of concentration right to the rim.

Nose: Interesting … black cherries, plums, some interesting herbaceous thing going on, green peppers, hint of oak, and vanilla. Very complex.

Taste: Also very complex. As the wine in my glass began to warm up I noted different things. Like the nose there was cherry, green bell peppers, and a hint of oak and that herbaceous thing. Light tannins, medium body with a silky mouthfeel. It’s an enjoyable wine to sip on and would be terrific with BBQ’ed lamb.

The wine packs a good bit of acidity. A medium length finish. Overall this is one very nice glass of wine.

Interesting wine. I bought this wine after tasting a sample at the winery. I haven’t opened it yet but it tasted pretty good at the winery.

In 1997 grape researcher Valentin Blattner approached Euro Nursery in Harrow, Ontario who took on the responsibility of planting over 2800 “Varieties”. Over the next five years the vines were selected for their response to potential wine quality, regional climate and weather
    extremes.

Viewpointe took on the task of completing the selection process. View-pointe, in conjunction with Niagara College Teaching Winery, produced wines in 2005 from five of the twenty selections. From this grouping, three varieties were selected for further propagation (HG01, HG03, HG04). Colchester Cuvee is a blend of 40% HG01, 40% HG04 and 20% HG03.

    Some interesting things to note.

. Downy Mildew and Powdery Mildew resistant (A LOT less spray up to 67% reduction)
. Short season (Early ripening of wood leading to good winter hardiness)
    . Upright Growth (Less handwork)
    . High must sugars (HG03, HG04)
    . Decent Yield
