Pelee Island Alvar Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2009 Review
One of our four new wines in the “Alvar” collection. A subtle wine with lemon peel and tropical fruit aromas.
Winemaker’s Notes:
Alvars comprise a small percentage of the Earth’s ecosystems by land extent; although some 120 exist in the Great Lakes region, they comprise only 0.2% of the land area there. They provide a natural habitat for many rare birds, butterflies, plants and trees. The hop tree is one of them. A rare tree found in such Alvars along the shores of Lake Erie.
A subtle wine with lemon peel and tropical fruit aromas. Lively with a rich palate and long finish. A superb food wine!

There is so much I like about Semillon (Sémillon) that it requires a lesson on the grape.
It’s not a grape with a lot of presence in Essex County and it should be. Semillon is one of the white grape varieties of France’s Bordeaux region and I often refer to Lake Erie North Shore and Pelee Island as Canada’s Bordeaux region. Semillon is also the grape used in one of my favourite sweet wines, Sauternes.
This Pelee Island Winery Alvar series wine is fantastic. A delicious blend of Ontario grown Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.
Nose is tropical fruits and begs to be tasted.
The initial attack of taste shows a lot of lemon citrus, honey, and tropical fruits such as such as mango and papaya. Crisp acidity leaves the mouth watering followed by a long finish.
This wine should be chilled to serve.
This is one of those wines that should attract a good following of loyal sippers. Buy a few of this one!
