Erie Shore Zweigelt 2006 Review
Winemaker’s Notes:
This Austrian bred grape produces a medium bodied wine with good acidity, soft tannins and a distinctive red colour. Flavours include black pepper and currants.
If you have liked our Duet in the past, you are going to love the new Zweigelt! 100% Zweigelt. It has wonderful smoothness, good tannins, and spiciness. Aged in French Oak Barrels for 18 months. Matched with grilled meats, white meats, roast meats, pork and pizza.
This very popular Austrian grape is well suited to Lake Erie North Shore and our climate.

I am lucky. I often get to review wines with my wife, Wanda. We often sit together and share a glass of the wine that I will be reviewing. I poured her a glass of Erie Shore Zweigelt, she took a sip before I sat down and when she said “Oh, this is good” I knew I was in for a treat.
Nose was a bit earthy with some cherry and cranberry fruits.
Taste showed a lot of the red fruit character, earth, spice, mouth-watering acidity and just a hint of tannin. It was very multilayered with good balance.
You might think a wine that was aged in French Oak Barrels for 18 months would show more tannins but as I understand it, older barrels are used to age this wine so not a lot of the wood finds it’s way into the wine. This is a good thing as Zweigelt is lighter and much more delicate than say a Cab Franc or Cab Sauv which can handle more oak and tannin.
