Winemaker’s Notes:
When I first opened this Syrah it was very firm and smoky but as it opened over the course of an hour the smoke and mineral receded and sweet notes of new leather, vanilla, cedar and ultra-ripe black cherry/currant came forward. Often Syrah can be hard and tightly-knit in its youth but this one is round and generous now. It is framed by some pretty firm tannins and has that characteristic syrah pepper edge. This one cries out for a leg of lamb marinated in rosemary, garlic and mustard… roast to just-past-rare and carved into thick juicy slices.

This wine is everything a syrah is supposed to be and more.

Yes, it has that spicey black pepper nose and taste that one expects when they have a good syrah, but it is the secondary oak notes that kick this one up a notch.

Interesting mouthfeel, although still considered a young wine the tannins have already softened and give the wine a smooth, perhaps silky mouthfeel.

Sanson’s winery would have trouble growing syrah, it just too far inland from Lake Erie for the moderating effect. As I understand it the vineyard has baco and vidal vines. So the question is …. where did the Syrah come from? First clue, it is VQA “Lake Erie North Shore” so they are from our local appelation.

I have been told that the syrah grapes are from Smith & Wilson Estates. I have stated in the past that I have never had a bad wine from Smith & Wilson, they are quality grape growers and it shows in this wine.

Smith and Wilson recently pulled all of their syrah vines due to winter damage when the cold temps damaged their vines about a year ago so this may be the last of a syrah like this for a while. I suggest buying this wine you can. In fact buy a few and put them in your cellar, this wine should drink well over the next 5 years.

Tried this wine this evening. Although I’m not the wine reviewer that Gary is, I know what I like, and I liked this one very much. It reminded me a bit of a Cabernet Franc, which I also enjoy. The bottle was purchased on our first trip to this winery, and it will definitely not be our last!
