Pelee Island Alvar Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Review
Winemaker’s Notes:
One of our four new wines in the “Alvar” collection. A full-bodied wine characterized by plum, cherry, blackberry, vanilla and tobacco flavours.
Alvars comprise a small percentage of the Earth’s ecosystems by land extent; although some 120 exist in the Great Lakes region, they comprise only 0.2% of the land area there. They provide a natural habitat for many rare birds, butterflies, plants and trees. The hop tree is one of them. A rare tree found in such Alvars along the shores of Lake Erie.
Cabernet Sauvignon is often referred to as the “King of Red Wine Grapes”. This wine is full-bodied characterized by plum, cherry, blackberry, vanilla and tobacco flavours.
Try with red meats, heartier tomato- based pasta’s, lamb, strong-flavoured cheese and dark chocolates.

Pelee Island just released a new series of wines called the Alvar collection which I believe are named after the Stone Road Alvar conservation area on Pelee Island.
The collection consists of two reds and two whites. All four wines are VQA Ontario. They are listed under Pelee Island Winery’s premium collection. Pelee Island Winery has the distinction of having their own designated VQA appellation (VQA Pelee Island). Why are these wines are not VQA Pelee Island?? While it certainly is nice that these are VQA Ontario wines which does assure us that the grapes are from Ontario and meet VQA’s quality testing it would have been an additional benefit had these wines been VQA Pelee Island.
Let’s have a look at this wine.
Colour shows good concentration Top marks for that.
Nose was a bit shy so I gave it some time. It did open a bit which herbaceous notes. Not a lot of fruit.
Good fruit complexity in the taste. Cherry, plum, blackberry fruits but I found that it was a little green in taste suggesting the grapes may not have achieved complete ripeness when picked.
Mild tannins, this wine didn’t see much oak at all. Good balance with a rather short finish.
Pelee Island Winery makes some wonderful wines. This one was just ok.
I tasted this with Gary on a recent visit to my house. I tend to agree with Gary’s observations. I rated price great as it was his treat !!! I said to him I always have one overall decision on the wines I enjoy as I ask myself would I buy the same bottle again? I didn’t buy this one but wouldn’t buy and wouldn’t suggest to someone else to buy either.
