Fruit wines are rather new to me and I realize now that I have been missing out of something special. They can be very good and deserve more attention.

After hearing that local fruit winery “Black Bear Farms” had once again done very well at the “All Canadian Wine Championships” held in Windsor, Ontario I decided to visited the winery. It’s close to where I live, I have passed by it several times but had never stopped in.

The winery’s retail store offers samples of all thir wines however they are in little pastic mini cups that do not do the wines justice. In these cups you can’t swirl and smell the aromas of the wine. They also poured my samples at room temperature. I suggest chilling your fruit wines a little. Dispite the rather poor tasting conditions the wines do taste much better when chilled and poured into a wine glass.

Black Bear Farms Elderberry fruit wine is a real treat. It displays a beauitful ruby red colour with excellent concentration. A swirl in my wine glass released a powerful fruity nose. It has just the right amount of sweetness. Wonderful acidity to leave your mouth salivating. The wine has good body weight and mouthfeel. Long, long finish.

This is a fanastic fruit wine.

Price is a bit of an issue. Keep in my that at $18 this is for a 1/2 bottle (375 mL) and for this reason I knocked off a few points.

Fruit wines are new and deserve a second thought. I leave grape wines out of my taste and rating method. I have found that thses wines aRE PERFECT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. I just bought this one to take on a week end get away.
