This is the first Colio VQA Niagara Peninsula that I know of. Colio will be opening a winery on the Niagara River soon and also will introduce their new “Lake & River Series” of wines. This line will replace the current VQA wines with the yellow / orange labels on them. The new labels look much better. I once asked what was the decidion to put on those ugly orange /yellow labels and was told it was a marketing decision to try and make the bottles stick out on the LCBO shelves. Maybe it worked as intended but I thought it made the first impression of the wines look cheap.
One other note about this new series of wines from Colio before I begin the review. They are capped with the stelvin style screw caps. Colio has used screw caps on their popular “Girl’s Night Out” series so this is nothing new for them. Look for more screw cap bottles in the years to come. It’s the way to go for wines that are not meant to be cellared as it avoids all TCA (Corked) issues. There is no flow of oxygen into the bottle so do not bother trying to age they wines. Open them and drink then now.
Now about the wine.
The wine shows good concentration in the glass. Oak, vanilla, and cherry on the nose. It’s not really a pleasant nose.
This medium bodied wine has sharpe acidity but seems a little bit out of balance with the sweetness. Mild tannins however lots of oak tasted along with cherry and vanilla.
Finish was quite long.
