Winemaker’s Notes:
We’re thrilled to have our newest, and very popular new Summer Sun Cabernet now available. Summer Sun is a chilled red wine made of 100% Cabernet Franc, made with only minimal skin contact. The result is a delicate salmon coloured wine with a vibrant citrus nose with pronounced lime, fresh grapefruit with a dusting of sugar on the palate. It is matched with grilled vegetables, cold cuts, cheese, sole, oyster, snapper, salmon, quiche, burgers, ribs and hot spicy foods.
LCBO Staff Pick, Wine of the Month, and just perfect for a hot summer’s day.

Oh it doesn’t need to be a hot summer day to enjoy this wine. Yes it will taste good then but this wine is good all year round. For example, today it’s snowing outside and I just can inside from shoveling the drive way. My reward was opening a bottle of Erie Shore Summer Sun 2008.
This wine is perfect as an after dinner sipper. Colour is light pink. Citrus fills the nose and like the winemaker suggests it screams grapefruit on the palate. It’s hard to believe that this wine is made from 100% cab franc grapes. Finish is long lasting. This wine is a treat.
This wine is available at many local Windsor / Essex county LCBO’s. Pick this one up when you are there.
If you like to drink reisling or vidal (white wines) you are going to love this one.
I think the concept has caught on since some of the other local wineries are making their own versions of this fabulous wine. Chilled like a White, coloured like a Rose, and made with Red grapes. A treat for those non-red converts who feel the need to take a step in that direction. Great in any season as Gary says but a big hit on a summer patio. It’s a colourful and tasty education for those who’ve never tried a Cabernet Franc and what can become of it with some immagination. And hey, you can save some miles and get it at the LCBO.
As this is my first review, let me start with a comment that echoes something Gary mentioned. Be honest. In going through the reviews listed in these pages, I find that most wines are rated a full 5. While I enjoy a wide variety of Essex county wines (in fact they make up the vast majority of the wines I drink), I can’t say that 95% of them would rate a 5 in every category. All are different.
Erie Shore is the first local winery that we tried several years ago, and it remains our favourite. I enjoy several of their wines, however Summer Sun is not one of them. At first I thought it was just my immature palate, but as the years have passed, and my palate has matured, this wine still doesn’t do it for me. The above rating is generous at best. My overall impression is bland. The nose shows some fruit, but there’s definitely something lacking in the taste. The finish is clean, but I can’t agree with Gary that it’s long lasting. Nothing comes through for me. I really don’t get what is so popular about this wine. By contrast, Erie Shore’s Sellar Secret is not popular, but is a much superior wine in my view. Maybe I’m biased because I prefer a Chambourcin over a Cab Franc, I don’t know. Maybe the difference in taste comes through in these off-skin varieties, but I can drink Sellar Secret all day long. Be daring and stray off the popular path. Try the Sellar Secret instead! You’ll be glad you did.
