Mastronardi Merlot 2007 Review
Winemaker’s Notes:
As with all 2007 reds, this medium body Merlot shines. It demonstrates aromas of sweet vanilla and fresh black cherries. Bright cherry flavours continue on the palate with a very pleasant clean finish. A great partner with roasted lamb with just a hint of fresh rosemary.

This is a fine example of what the Lake Erie North Shore wine region has to offer. This Merlot from Mastronardi Estate Winery is excellent and a fine follow up to their earlier Merlot releases.
Mastronardi’s 2002 Merlot is one of my favourite wines but at $60/ bottle it is out of my budget for anything other than a very special occasion. Besides at the time of this writing they only had a few cases left so it will be gone soon.
Not to worry, the 2007 Merlot is an excellent substitute and a good value at under $20. Cherry and vanillin oak hit the nose. There is a nice touch of chocolate, black cherries, and plums on the palate followed by mild tannins and a hint of that velvety smooth finish found in the 2002 Merlot. This wine is ready to be enjoyed now.
A well balanced wine, not too thin but not too heavy either. A bright, ripe, open red wine.
