Smith & Wilson Syrah 2006 Review
Shiraz, dry, Watercress Creek Release
Award winning wine:
ACWC Silver & Ontario Wine Awards – 2008 Bronze
Winemaker’s Notes:
Deep dark red wine. The bouquet suggests cinnamon and blackberry and a whiff of pepper. It tastes soft and mellow with a lick of pepper and blackberry with a soft chocolate finish.
Our syrah pairs well with a freshly roasted spring lamb, or veal. Good with prime rib or pizza too.
13% alc./vol.
Price: 750 mL $18

This is one of the best Syrah’s I have ever tasted. From start to finish this one was just so tasty. There is another that I recently barrel tasted that just may be as good. We will see when it is released in April this year.
Smith & Wilson’s Syrah 2006 has a nice deep red colour. A quick swirl of my glass revealed that this wine had good legs or curtains.
The nose is a mix of black pepper and dark berries. Very nice.
This wine is an award winner and when you taste it you you will know why. It is one of the best Lake Erie North Shore wines that I have ever tried. It’s right up there with Jackson-Triggs 2004 Proprietors Grand Reserve Shiraz which some claim to be the best shiraz / syrah produced in Ontario.
It has been a very cold winter in Ontario, including Soutwest Ontario where we have had unseasonably cold temps for long periods of time. There are a few local wineries who have been growing the Syrah vines for a few years now. Some are reporting that the vines may have been damaged by the cold temps and we may not see any more Syrah for a few years until the crops can grow back.
If Smith & Wilson’s Syrah 2006 is still available …. BUY IT!!
