This Meritage has a dark red colour. When I first opened this wine the nose opens with a wonderful berry bouquet.
I was surprised by the taste of this wine. Not at all what I was expecting from a wine that had been in the barrel for 18 months. I was expecting a big red oaky tannic wine and this was not the case at all. Lots of black berry and cherry notes, very fruit forward. More Merlot in taste than Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc. The finish was dry and long.
I decanted the wine for several hours before dinner as I wanted to note any changes.
Dinner was a nice roast beef. This Mertiage and roast beef were a perfect pairing for each other. The wine still had the bold cherry and blackberry notes. Still very Merlot like however the finish was very different. I am not sure if it was the food pairing or the decanting. It finished smoothly with blueberry accents, toasty oak, and had more Cabernet qualities that I didn’t notice when I first opened and tasted.
My concern with this wine was the $25 price tag. Any wine breaking the $20 barrier better be good. This is an very nice blended, well balanced wine with a lot of qualities and worth the price tag.
Buy a few bottles and cellar them. The wine is very good right now with roast beef or a nice big BBQ’ed steak but I believe that it will only get better and reward the owner with a little time in the cellar.
FOLLOW UP NOTES: Try this wine the day after you open it. There is a smoothness that I really enjoyed. The oak taste comes forward a little bit more but is not overwelming. This wine, already excellent just seemed to get better the next day. Bonus!
Its been awhile since any new wines have been some that I have actually tried. So I was pleased to notice this one. I had this wine recently with a few wonderful friends.
For the price I was certainly expecting like Gary mentioned a much bigger bolder wine. Infact the wine is at best a medium bodied wine that perhaps will soften in time perhaps to new in bottle. I did pick up cherry and plum and a long licorice finish. Overall, I know the young men at this winery are hobby winemakers and once they decide to put all their efforts into wine making they too will find their place amongst the old veteran vintners.
I don’t think Barb’s review is a fair one. I will give her that this wine does cost much more than most other wines and for that I will give it 1 less star but don’t forget that this wine has been in a barrel for 18 months. The reason the wine is not over powered with oak taste is because they have done a wonderful job finding the perfect blend of the three wines. The wines in this blend match perfectly. The Muscedere’s make excellent wines and this one is no different.
Fanastic red wine. Smooth and velvety.
