Wanda and I opened a bottle of Mastronardi Brianjë 2006 for dinner tonight. This wine is a Riesling and it is very good. I BBQ’ed chicken breast which made for a perfect pairing with this wine. This is a sweet wine that would also be good with any gouda cheese. I used the outside evening cool air to chill this wine while I was BBQing. It should be chilled, but not cold when serving.
My first impression was a honey taste that was nice and smooth. This wine could also be serve as a cocktail. It is just that good.
Now I did a bit of research before trying this wine. I had never heard of a wine called “BriAnjë” before. On the label it did say that it was a Riesling so I went insearch of the meaning of “BriAnjë”
It didn’t take me too long to discover that the first wine ever bottled at Mastronardi Estate Winery was a Riesling. The founders, Eadie and Tony Mastronardi branded their first creation, “BriAnjë”. The name comes from the Portuguese language. It translates to “Angel Brittany”.
“Angel Brittany”, Brittany Mastronardi, the Mastronardi’s daughter, passed away at the age of 11 to a very rare and fatal neuro-degenerative brain disease, called Batten Disease.
Pavlo, a classical guitarist who creates “Mediterranean” style music. He created a song in honour of “BriAnj. You can download this song here:

Pavlo performs at Mastronardi Winery every year. He is scheduled to returned on June 6, 2009 Kingsville at Mastronardi’s 4th Annual Dionysus.

This is a very nice wine. My wife and I enjoy this one over all of he others we have tried.
This Reisling is not quite like the others. On the nose immediately honeysuckle and lychee with hints of tropical fruit which is quite rare to describe a wine in this region like that. This wine has been a trademark with this winery since its grand opening. As Gary explained the wine is dedicated in memory of the founders child, you can read the brief story on the back label of each bottle. The proceeds from this wine is donated to the disease the child succumbed to. This is a great healing! Bravo Mastronardi Family Bravo!
