Although the winemaker describes this as a “light red wine” I would suggest otherwise. In colour this wine is a dark purple colour. Perhaps the winemaker meant that the taste of the wine was light. I also disagree with this as the wine has a bitter aftertaste.
This is not a sipping wine. It needs to be paired with something to really enjoy it. I originally tried this wine within an hour of pulling the cork. It was ok. I decided to let the wine sit overnight to see what happened. I decided to pair the wine with a paste / chicken dinner and the wine tasted much better. It still had a bitter aftertaste but this was not as strong as the day before.
DRY!
For any of you looking for that dust dry red wine this is your answer. It’s not for everyone though. I’ve sampled Sal’s Old Vines Foch before and I always manage to grab a bottle for something different. And it was on sale!
I love the deep colour and how it actually stains the glass when you swirl it. It has an earthy nose to me and I could follow up on that by saying it has a “dirty” taste. I don’t mean that in a bad way.
Being an ’05 this wine is ready to drink although I think you could sit on it for years to come.
You don’t see Foch wines in many places so take a taste when you get a chance to visit D’Angelo winery.
