Bricklayer’s Reward OLD FARM CABERNET FRANC 2012 Review

0 overall score

Bricklayer’s Estate Wines at Colio Estate Wines

Winemaker’s Notes:
Our Cabernet Franc vines are in the oldest part of our vineyard, aptly named the Old
Farm. Soils here are rockier than elsewhere in the vineyard, allowing for good drainage
and healthy fruit and vines. Also in parts nearest to the moderating effects of Lake Erie,
the fruit is given the greatest opportunity to ripen properly, avoiding the bell pepper
aromas common in many Cabernet Francs made with less ripe fruit.

Colour: Medium purple
Bouquet: Savour the aromas of ripe berries.
Taste: Pronounced flavours of ripe blackcurrants, raspberries, and a smooth finish imparted on the wine by skilled oak aging.
Food Matches: Pair with game meats, steak and rosemary roasted lamb
Serve At: 15-18°C

VINIFICATION
Fermentation: Stainless steel tanks
Aging: 16 months, 75% in French /25% in American oak barrels, 30% new barrels

Residual Sugar: 4.5 g/L

Bricklayer’s Estate Wines at Colio Estate Wines

    Winemaker’s Notes:
This wine comes from some of the most exceptional terroir on the estate, known for producing excellent quality grapes. The fruit was isolated from the harvest for being especially concentrated in flavour and body, which allows it to hold up to skilled oak ageing.

    Colour: Medium ruby
Bouquet: Fruit-forward with robust red fruit aromas
Taste: Rich flavours of plum and cherry, with toasty hints of vanilla and spice from skilled oak aging
Food Matches: Grilled or roasted meats like steak, or prime rib
    Serve At: 15-18°C

Bricklayer’s Estate Wines at Colio Estate Wines

      Winemaker’s Notes:
This wine has been crafted from grapes grown on older vines and in the northern-most parts of our vineyard, where clay soils dominate. This leads to smaller berries that are highly concentrated in flavour.

      Colour: Deep ruby
Bouquet: Fruit-forward with tantalizing black fruit aromas
Taste: Rich and robust with flavours of cassis, vanilla and spice with a smooth lingering finish
Food Matches: Grilled or roasted meats like steak, or prime rib
      Serve At: 15-18°C

      VINIFICATION
      Fermentation: Stainless steel tanks

      5.00 overall score

      Winemaker’s Tasting Notes:

The 2012 Vintage was the complete alter ego of 2011! The record low rainfalls almost reach drought levels, but just when we really needed rain, we got it. High brix levels were reached earlier than usual allowing for a harvest date based on the important criteria of ripeness, acidity and flavour. That luxurious combination is captured in this bottle of our 2012 Cabernet Franc Reserve. Aged for 12 months in both French and American oak barrels this wine exhibits a complex juiciness on the palate that further highlights the character of this amazing vintage and varietal. We only have 150 cases of this amazing wine.

      2.67 overall score

      Winemaker’s Notes:
I really don’t think I have ever visited Sanson Estate without someone coming in during my time there and buying a couple of bottles of this wine. It seems to be a staple for Essex County locals. Vidal is actually a hybrid grape that was designed to survive Canada’s inclement winters but it found a niche as ice wine – actually celebrating those same cold months. Harvested a little late in the fall, after the fruit has had time to accumulate extra ripeness this wine shows round, honeyed aromas of pineapple and peach that carry to a soft, round, full palate. It’s simply an easy-to-drink, slightly off-dry, un oaked wine that is great on its own or will compliment a surprising range of foods – anything from pan-fried fish to roast fowl to spicy Asian cuisine… or just enjoy a glass on its own.

      0 Reviews
      5.00 overall score

      Winemaker’s Notes:
An EPIC Wine. Between the ideal timing of very few rains during the 2012 vintage and the dropping of inferior grapes from the vine before harvesting, this Premium 2012 merlot Reserve is a very proud example of optimal grape growing and winemaking in the Lake Erie North Shore viticultural region. Deep concentration is integrated with the rare opportunity to use new oak flair. This wine is a craft of art, from soil to finish in every aspect of the world of Merlot. We have bottled only 125 cases of this amazing wine.

      Rori McCaw, Winemaker

      Tasting Notes:
Another of our premium wines, this medium bodied red is smooth and a delight to the senses. On the nose is essence of old fashioned black licorice, mocha, blueberry, leather and cocoa. The palate tastes of blackberry, coffee, dark chocolate and raspberry. Subtle, sweet and velvety oak makes a perfect lingering finish.

Pair this beauty with prime rib, surf and turf, dishes with fennel or tarragon and enjoy with Black Forest cake.
